Northland Meals on Wheels' purpose is to supply meals at or near cost to the homebound who are unable, because of sickness, age, or other handicap to provide proper nutrition for themselves.
Since 1973, Northland Meals on Wheels has helped thousands of clients live healthier and longer in the comfort of their own homes. Oftentimes receiving meals means they can delay giving up independence by moving in with family members or into assisted living/nursing home facilities.
Clients receive meals for a variety of reasons, but often it is a matter of no longer being able to cook for themselves. Many times our volunteers are the only outside contact clients may have on a daily basis, Monday through Friday. Hot nutritious noon-time meals are prepared by the NKC Hospital and delivered by our friendly volunteers. No one is turned away due to inability to pay. Less than 10% of our operating expenses come from the price of meals; we rely heavily on donations, fundraising such as March For Meals and grants to pay the rest of our operating expenses. This helps keep the cost of meals low as most of our clients are on fixed incomes.
Currently there are 17 routes serving up to 180 clients daily in southern Clay County. Our boundaries are NKC to the south, 1-435 to the west, Platte County line on the east and 95th Street on the north.
